This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded creamy vanilla/yellow tones. They are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect. There are some real classic works here by Voltaire, Corneille and Montaigne to give your bookshelves an air of sophistication!

They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.

The five books are all paperback editions, distressed from years of genuine use. One or two of the books have some of their pages uncut/not separated - they have been like this since publication - and are all the more charming for it. They have also gathered pencilled scholarly notes, remarks, comments, on the pages, over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic. Most importantly they have that "old book smell" reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.

The titles are:

Montaigne et Ses Amis, La Boétie, Charron, Mlle de Gournay. Paul Bonnefon (1898 edition.) Michel de Montaigne, Lord of Montaigne (28 February 1533 – 13 September 1592) was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. His Essays are some of the most influential ever written! This book explores his relationships with other writers of the time, Marie de Gournay, Pierre Charron and Étienne de La Boétie.

Théatre Choisi de Cornaille. Maurice Rat (1950 edition.) Pierre Corneille (6 June 1606 – 1 October 1684) was a French tragedian. He is generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine. This book contains many of his most famous plays, such as Le Cid, Horace, Cinna, Polyeucte and Nicoméde to name but a few! It also has a selection of his poetry and sonnets.

Dictionnaire Philosophique, Voltaire, Tome Premier. (c.1940 edition.) The first volume of a study of this famous work by Voltaire. *The Philosophical Dictionary was an encyclopedic dictionary first published by Voltaire in 1764. It is written as a series of short essays, hortatory and propagandist, over an enormously wide range of subjects. The Dictionnaire was a lifelong project for Voltaire. It represents the culmination of his views on Christianity, God, morality and other subjects.
It was deliberately planned as a revolutionary book and was duly denounced on all sides and described as 'a deplorable monument of the extent to which intelligence and erudition can be abused'. The subjects treated include Abraham, Angel and Anthropophages (cannibals); Baptism, Beauty and Beasts; Fables, Fraud and Fanaticism; Metempsychosis, Miracles and Moses; all of them exposed to Voltaire's lucid scrutiny, his elegant irony and his passionate love of reason and justice. This book starts with "Abbé" and ends with "Fraude."

L'Evolution de la Poésie Lyrique en France au XIXè Siècle, Tome Premier et Tome Second, Ferdinand Brunetière. (1922 editions) Two gorgeous volumes of classic works by so many of Frances's famous writers of the 19th century, such as Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset, Lamartine, Alfred de Vigny, Théophile Gautier and more.

To display them altogether, in a bundle, you will need a minimum space of 12.5cms/ 5" high x 20cms/ 7¾" long x 15cms/ 6" deep.
