This is a very rare 1960's, majolica glazed, vintage, mid century bowl, shaped as a leaf
Anyone who collects majolica glazed mid century pottery would love this wonderful piece.
It would make a gorgeous fruit bowl or look stunning on an entrance hall table for storing keys etc. Perfect for Autumn themed interiors. An absolutely stunning table centerpiece.
This amazing ceramic dish is made in Vallauris. The small scenic town of Vallauris is in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes -Côte d'Azur region of South-Eastern France.
It became world famous when Picasso lived there in the 1940's and 1950's and Majolica from Vallauris is celebrated for its beautiful glazes and extraordinary shapes.
This bowl has been hand-painted in an expressive mid-century modern, highly textured design that typically characterizes the region’s pottery.
The brown base glaze of this bowl has been overlaid with a gorgeous mixture of turquoise, blue, yellow, white and creamy caramel 'foam' that mingles with the fiery red on the outer edges, running down into the center, to cleverly form the veins within the leaf.
It is shaped as a leaf, with a stem. The pronounced, fluted, edge folds down deeply to the base, forming, smooth, undulations that are incredibly tactile and alluring.
It measures 27.5cms/ 10¾", at it's widest points, and is 8.5cms/ 3¼" at its deepest.
It weighs 1.1kgs/ 2.4lbs!
It is in pristine, perfect condition, with no chips or cracks.
It is clearly marked 'Vallauris' on the base.
A beautiful piece of Vintage Vallauris Pottery! ..............We love it!.................
