This is a vintage French terracotta wine cooler 'Brique a Vin'- Very charming and rustic.
It is branded with the very famous 'Côtes de Provence: appellàtion d'origine contrôlee' mark and invites you to 'redécouvrez le vin le plus ancient de France' (rediscover the oldest wine in France).
Around the bottom it has the words 'Ce pot en terre cuite, naturelle et poreuses, permet de maintenir le vin à la temperature idéale' (This clay pot, natural and porous, allows to keep the wine at the ideal temperature)
It would make a great gift for your host/hostess alongside a bottle of Côtes de Provence and any wine connoisseur would be delighted to receive this as a gift.
The wine cooler stands 22cms/ 8½" tall and is 12cms/ 4¾" diameter.
It weighs 1.2kgs / 2.6 lbs.
The inside of this wine cooler is super smooth and it has no chips. The back of this cooler has an original clay 'curing line', pre-firing hairline crack., commonly seen in this type of unglazed 'rough' terracotta pottery. I have shown it in the last three images. It does not in any way effect the integrity or functionality of this wine cooler and is simply a result of its manufacture. It has a light marks, consistent with use.
These wine coolers are very effective during Summer to keep your white wine or rosé chilled. It can also be used in Winter to keep your red wine at the correct room temperature.
There are two ways to use it:
For chilling white wine and rosé:
Soak the wine cooler in cold water for about 7 minutes. The clay will darken as it absorbs the moisture, empty the water and place your favourite bottle of chilled wine in the cooler. The evaporation process will keep your wine cold for 3/4 hours!
For maintaining red wine at the 'idéale température':
Once you have warmed your red wine to the correct room temperature simply place it into the wine cooler and it will remain at the same temperature throughout the meal.
The Côtes de Provence appellation spans more than 20,000 hectares (nearly 50,000 acres) and three departments: the Var, the Bouches-du-Rhône and one village in the Alpes-Maritimes; because of the terroir's size and variety, there is not one but several types of Côtes de Provence. Each has its own geological and climatic personality. What a great opportunity to try these wines and impress you guests at dinner.
