Over 160 years old these books are very rare and collectible, they are hardcover editions with wonderful, marbleized, covers. Each one is stunning in its own right and together they make an incredible impact.
The patina is outstanding, they are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect and add an extra 'French chic' to your collection!
The titles are:
"Histoire de la Littérature Français", J. Demogeot (1857 edition.) A huge tome covering French literature through the ages, studying genres and eras, their influences and impacts on social and political movements and changes.
"Poésies Complètes de Théophile Gautier" (1862 edition.) Pierre Jules Théophile Gautier (30 August 1811 – 23 October 1872) was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and art and literary critic. "Poésies" was first published in 1830, it was a collection of 42 poems that Gautier composed at the age of 18. However, as the publication took place during the July Revolution, no copies were sold and it was eventually withdrawn. In 1832, the collection was reissued with 20 additional poems under the name Albertus. Another edition in 1845 included revisions of some of the poems. This book is his complete poetry works.
"Eléments de Littérature" par Marmontel. Tome I (1856), Tome II (1856) and Tome III. (1857 edition.) These three volumes study the structure and genres of written French. There are examples of famous French literary works throughout, illustrating comedy, tragedy, satire, poetry, songs to name but a few!.
"Oeuvres Complètes de Régnier", M. Prosper Poitevin (1860 edition.) Mathurin de Régnier (December 21, 1573 – October 22, 1613) was a French satirist. This book contains his complete works.
These six books are in genuine antique condition, as you can see from the photos, the spines are delicate, and scuffed, and one of the spines has sustained damage, but is complete. The pages have 'age spots' and edge discoloration which adds to their charm and authenticity. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
They need to be handled with respect for their age and condition.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
If you choose to stand them up (like a normal library shelf) then you need a space 18cms/ 7" high x 20cms/ 7¾" long and 12cms/ 4¾" deep.
They weigh 2.7kgs/ 6 lbs altogether.
