This is a stunning set of six antique French books in faded beige/cream tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There are books here that study French Literature by some of France's most famous writers, such as Rabelais and Honoré de Balzac to add an extra 'French chic' to your collection!
I found them in an antique book fair in Paris and fell in love with them.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.
The six books are all distressed from years of genuine use, the covers are faded, and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
Anthologie de Poètes du XIXe Siècle - E. Maynial (Hardcover 1935 edition.) 19th Century poetry from famous writers such as Alfred de Musset, Paul Verlaine, Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, Lamartine, Alfred de Vigny and many more!
Honoré de Balzac, Morceaux Choisis - Joachim Merlant (Paperback 1950 edition.) Honoré de Balzac (20 May 1799 – 18 August 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. The novel sequence La Comédie humaine, which presents a panorama of post-Napoleonic French life, is generally viewed as his magnum opus. This book is a study of his life, and extracts and analysis of his works.
Grammaire de l'Académie Française (Paperback 1932 edition.) Studies of French grammar, vocabulary and verb conjugation.
H. de Balzac, Pages Choisies - E.-B. Lang (Paperback 1926 edition.) This book has a few pages uncut - they have been like this since publication - and are all the more charming for it.
Auteurs Français, Vingtième Siècle - F. Gendrot et F. M. Eustache (1954 edition.) Studies of 20th century, French, literature with the works of Jean-Paul Sartre, Marcel Proust, Paul Claudel and Georges Simenon to name but a few!
Rabelais, Gargantua et Pantagruel, Tome III. (Paperback 1913 edition.) The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel is a pentalogy of novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais, which tells of the adventures of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel. This is the third novel in the series.
These books are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks, and names inside the front covers, over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
If you would like to display the books in a flat bundle, tied up with twine, then you would need a minimum space of 13cms/ 5" high x 20cms/ 7¾" long x 14cms/ 5½" deep.
They weigh 1.9kgs/ 4.1lbs.
