This vintage hand painted ceramic cheese platter carries the POËT LAVAL mark on the underside and dates from the late 1960's/early 1970's. Poët Laval (Pronounced Pwet!) is a village in south eastern France, not far from Montelimar. It has long been involved in the production of pottery.
The design has perhaps been inspired by a Cezanne still life as it has the intense colors, dark outlines and bold objects associated with works of that time.
It is absolutely stunning 'close up'.
It has a majolica glaze, over a base of matt 'pewter' slate effect, so that the motif is outlined for higher impact. The candle stick and leaves are 'foam' glazed, raised against the smooth, glossy finish of the grapes and cherries. The detail in the 'speckled' apple is simply beautiful.
A very tactile and striking table centerpiece. A real 'talking point' for your 'after dinner' conversation.
Rare and collectible.
It has a Twisted Wrought Iron Handle, which can be unscrewed for ease of storage or for wall display.
Measures 30cms/11¾" diameter and weighs 1.2kgs/2.6lbs. It is in excellent condition, there is just one, tiny, tiny 'nick' on the underside edge, it cannot been seen from the top, and in no way detracts from this amazing platter.
The perfect gift for cheese lovers. Why not give this platter as a gift to your host/hostess along with some French cheeses and a bottle of Bordeaux wine..........Perfection!................
