This is a stunning set of five old French books in faded "duck egg blue/grey" tones. They are "aged to perfection", perfect for shabby chic displays and an "old library" effect.

They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.

The five books are all distressed from years of genuine use, and some of the pages are delicate and loose:

The titles are:

Fables, La Fontaine, R. Radouant (Hardcover 1929 edition.) Jean de La Fontaine (8 September 1621 – 13 April 1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. This book contains all of his famous fables, including our personal favourite, The Fox and the Crow.

1815, Henry Houssaye (Paperback 1905 edition.) Henry Houssaye (24 February 1848 – 23 September 1911), was a French historian and academic. This book is the second volume of the military history of Napoleon I. His first volume "1814", Histoire de la Campagne de France et la Chute de l'Empire (1888), went through no fewer than 46 editions. It was followed by this book "1815", the first part of which comprises the first Restoration, the return from Elba and the Hundred Days (1893); the second part, Waterloo (1899); and the third part, the second abdication and the White Terror (1905).

Histoire de l'Europe et de la France, de 1610 à 1789. Jean-Baptiste Melin (Hardcover c. 1890 edition.) The cover of this book is loose and it has some exquisite handwritten notes tucked inside the front cover, I've left them there as part of this books history for you.

La Littérature Expliquée, CH.-M. des Granges et CH. Charrier (Hardcover 1933 edition.) This book is packed full of studies of famous literary works by all of France's most celebrated writers such as Molière, Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Corneille, Balzac, Rabelais, Emile Zola, Balzac, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau to name but a few!

Histoire Ancienne, Orient, Grèce, Rome. E. Jarry (Hardcover c. 1935 edition.) A school study book for children aged 12 - 14 years old. It covers ancient history from the birth of civilisation, through the Egyptian dynasties and the Greeks to the fall of the Roman Empire.

These books have, over their long life, gathered pencilled scholarly notes, remarks, comments, on the pages, over the years. They have names inside the front covers too. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic. Most importantly they have that "old book smell" reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.

To display them altogether you will need a minimum space of 16cms/ 6¼" high x 21cms/ 8¼" long x 14cms/ 5½" deep. Altogether they weigh 2.3kgs/ 5 lbs.
