Anyone who collects majolica glazed mid century pottery would love this wonderful piece.
It would make a gorgeous table centerpiece for any rustic farmhouse or rural country cottage kitchen, with an autumnal color scheme. Great for serving stylish canapés with before dinner drinks. A beautiful platter for seafood and fruit displays for fall/autumn themed weddings and banquets.
The small scenic town of Vallauris is in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes -Côte d'Azur region of South-Eastern France.
It became world famous when Picasso lived there in the 1940's and 1950's and Majolica from Vallauris is celebrated for its beautiful glazes and extraordinary shapes.
This platter has been hand-painted in an expressive mid-century modern, highly textured design that typically characterizes the Vallauris region of South-Eastern France's pottery. It has the 'Vallauris' stamp on the underside.
The brown base glaze of this plate has been overlaid with a gorgeous mixture of turquoise/green, white and creamy brown 'foam' that mingles with ‘fiery orange/red’ surrounding glaze and caramel tips.
It is shaped as a leaf, with ridged, pronounced, 'veins' that are incredibly tactile and alluring.
It is large measuring 49cms/19¼" x 27cms/10½" and is 6cms/2¼" deep.
It is heavy, weighing 2.3kgs/ 5lbs!
It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, it has a few 'unglazed' spots which have been present since manufacture and are simply the areas where the 'drizzled' glaze missed a couple of tiny areas, these are not noticeable at normal viewing distance and in no way detract from the beauty or quality of this wonderful item.
