This is a fabulous antique, early 1900's, French mustard / preserve pot. It is a gorgeous accent piece for a period kitchen / rustic farmhouse. Its large size makes it excellent for storing kitchen utensils or as a planter for herbs.
It is stamped ' J. Damoy, Paris' into the side at the base and dates from the early 1900's.
Julien Damoy is one of the earliest Parisian Department Stores no longer in existence. The Julien Damoy grocery stores sold their own range of preserves and mustards at the beginning of the 20th century so this jar carries its own little piece of French history.
It has a smooth, shiny glaze and its rustic, handmade quality gives it a wonderful, tactile, textured quality from the 'speckled' air bubbles formed during the glazing process.
The cork stopper, which is also 'vintage,' and so slightly worn in places, adds to the charm and 'rustic' appearance of this gorgeous crock.
It is irresistibly stylish in its understated form. Its antique white, oatmeal, color makes it ideal for 'neutral' rooms.
It weighs 1.1kgs/ 2.4lbs. It stands 15cms / 6" tall (including the cork), is 12.5cms / 5" diameter (at the base). The opening is 8.5cms / 3¼".
In near perfect condition for its 120 year age, it has a small graze at the base (see last photo). It has many years of service yet to offer.
