This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded grey tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There are books here by some of France's most famous writers, Voltaire and Pierre de Ronsard, to give your bookshelves added French Chic! A copy of Edmond Rostand's Play 'Cyrano de Bergerac' is also included in this book stack.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft greys and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots.
This 'light grey' book bundle is made up of French, antiquarian books, very collectible and increasingly hard to find. They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The five books are all distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Memento de Sténographie, Principes et Règles- Exercises Gradués - Paul Fleury et Ernest Roy (1936 hardcover edition.) This is a fascinating book on shorthand. It is packed full of the symbols and marks once used to write with speed and brevity, before the invention of recording and dictation machines. In the 1930's, when this book was published, shorthand was considered an essential part of secretarial training and police work and was useful for journalists.
Encyclopédie Des Connaissances Agricoles. Le Cheval - E. C. Fraisse (1940 hardcover edition.) This gorgeous book is a study of Horses and equine management. It covers everything on the anatomy and physiology of Horses, alongside feeding, stabling and farming methods.
Pierre de Ronsard. Oeuvres Complètes VII, Les Odes de 1555, Les Continuations des Amours 1555- 1556 - Paul Laumonier (paperback 1934 edition.) Pierre de Ronsard (11 September 1524 – 27 December 1585) was a French poet or, as his own generation in France called him, a "prince of poets". This book contains some of his most famous works.
Voltaire - Candide et L'Ingénu (hardcover 1947 edition.) François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), known by his nom de plume Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit, his criticism of Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic Church, as well as his advocacy of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and separation of church and state. This book contains two of Voltaire's most famous works. Candide, a satire first published in 1759, and L'Ingénu, a satirical novella first published in 1767.
Cyrano De Bergerac - Edmond Rostand (paperback 1930 edition.) Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand. There was a real Cyrano de Bergerac, and the play is a fictionalisation following the broad outlines of his life. This book is the complete play in five acts, it is written in verse, in rhyming couplets of twelve syllables per line.
