This set of six vintage French, 'Gien', fish plates, and matching fish platter, are the perfect gift for anglers. This rare and collectible set dates from the 1950's.
All these plates and platter are in excellent condition, for their 70 year age, with no chips or cracks, and have the 'Gien' mark on the underside. Gien was founded in 1821 and is today the number one producer of the highest quality earthenware in France.
They all have a tactile, fluted, edge and 'gilt trim' line border. The wide pastel yellow band finishes with a delicate 'filigree' lace gilt pattern.
The plates measure 24 cms (9½") diameter and each weigh 400 gms (14 ozs.) The design illustrates a pike swimming amongst reeds in lakes/rivers. The colors and details of the motif are incredibly accurate and realistic, with the 'water' brushed across the fish to give the impression of its movement through the river.
The platter measures 37 cms (14½") long x 25 cms (10") wide and weighs 900 gms (2 lbs.) The gorgeous illustration of the Pike, swimming amongst reeds and other fish, is one of the most detailed I have ever seen.
One of the plates has a slight 'gilt smudge' from the glazing stage of the firing process.
Perfect for fish lovers the world over this would make a truly original present for anyone who loves fishing and cooking fresh water fish.
