This is a lovely, round, French confit pot / storage jar. It is a gorgeous accent piece for a period kitchen / rustic farmhouse. Excellent for storing washing up/ kitchen utensils, cutlery or as a kitchen planter.
"Confit" is the French word that means “to preserve” and these pots were used for preserving cooked meats for long term storage in stone-lined larders or underground cellars, popular up until the 1940's, before refrigeration.
This pot is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. It has a rough, slightly iridescent, surface texture on the outside and a smooth, glossy, glaze on the inside. It is perfectly watertight. It is utterly charming. It has a small, raised, white glaze "spot" on one side. A truly rustic treasure 'aged to perfection', authentic and original.
The perfect accessory for French provincial interiors.
It has many years of service yet to offer.
It weighs 800gms/ 1.8 lbs! It stands 11cms / 4¼" tall and is 15cms / 6" diameter.
