This is a lovely, French confit pot / storage jar. It is a gorgeous accent piece for a period kitchen / rustic farmhouse. Excellent for displaying kitchen utensils/cutlery or as a storage jar for walnuts/chestnuts etc. Great as a kitchen planter too!
"Confit" is the French word that means “to preserve” and these pots were used for preserving cooked meats for long term storage in stone-lined larders or underground cellars, popular up until the 1940's, before refrigeration.
This pot is in excellent condition. It has a rough, slightly iridescent, surface texture on the outside and a smooth, glossy, glaze on the inside. It is still perfectly watertight. It is utterly charming, with it's odd 'dints' and undulations. It has the beginnings of 'hairline' crackle to the glaze on the inside, and some discoloration too, which is to be expected with the age of this pot. A truly rustic treasure 'aged to perfection', authentic and original.
The perfect accessory for French provincial interiors.
It has many years of service yet to offer.
It is weighs 900gms/ 2 lbs! It stands 13cms / 5" tall, is 13.5cms / 5¼" diameter and 18cms / 7" wide to the handle.
