This platter would make an exquisite gift for a seafood chef or an excellent house warming present for those living near the sea.
Dating from the 1970's this platter has been 'spray' glazed individually, so each shell varies slightly from the others in colour and intensity. Some are more 'grey' then others, whose colours verge on 'blue/grey'. Wonderfully tactile with 'ridges' reminiscent of scallop shells there cannot be a more stylish way to serve your seafood course at dinner parties.
Originally designed as a table centrepiece for serving 'Coquilles St. Jacques', (scallops) the platter has twelve 'scallop shell-shaped' depressions and two 'lemon wells' in the centre, where you stylishly serve your lemon ready for squeezing onto the seafood. It could also be used for oysters.
The Platter weighs 1kg (2.2 lbs) and measures 33cms/13" diameter.
Marked MOULIN DES LOUPS 'ORCHIES' France (Mill of wolves in English.) This porcelain mark was used when the famous Orchies and Hamage factories merged and became Moulin des Loups & Hamage, whose mark comprised a windmill and the name ORCHIES in capitals, (as shown on the bottom of this platter) from the 1920's to the 1970's.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips at all. There is the slightest hint of some 'hairline crackle' to the glaze, on the underside, but this is to be expected with the age of the platter and does not in any way detract from the beauty or quality of this gorgeous item.
