This is a lovely, French confit pot / storage jar. It is a gorgeous accent piece for a period kitchen / rustic farmhouse. Excellent for displaying kitchen utensils/cutlery or as a storage jar for walnuts/chestnuts etc. Great as a kitchen planter too!
"Confit" is the French word that means “to preserve” and these pots were used for preserving cooked meats for long term storage in stone-lined larders or underground cellars, popular up until the 1940's, before refrigeration.
This pot is in excellent condition. It has a rough, slightly iridescent, surface texture on the outside and a smooth, lightly speckled, glossy, glaze on the inside. It is still perfectly watertight. It is utterly charming, with it's odd 'dints' and undulations. A truly rustic treasure 'aged to perfection', authentic and original.
The perfect accessory for French provincial interiors.
It has many years of service yet to offer.
It is weighs 800gms/ 1.7 lbs! It stands 11cms / 4¼" tall, is 13cms / 5" diameter and 16cms / 6¼" wide to the handle.
