This is a lovely, French confit pot / storage jar. It is a gorgeous accent piece for a period kitchen / rustic farmhouse. Excellent for washing soaps and scouring pads/dish cloths by an old ceramic sink. Perfect for cutlery or as a kitchen herb planter.
"Confit" is the French word that means “to preserve” and these pots were used for preserving cooked meats for long term storage in stone-lined larders or underground cellars, popular up until the 1940's, before refrigeration.
This pot is in excellent condition. It has a rough, slightly iridescent, surface texture on the outside and the base is 'grazed'. It has a smooth, lightly speckled, glossy, glaze on the inside. There is discoloration and some 'crackle' to the glaze on the inside but It is still perfectly watertight. It is utterly charming, with it's odd 'dints' and undulations. A truly rustic treasure 'aged to perfection', authentic and original.
The perfect accessory for French provincial interiors.
It has many years of service yet to offer.
It is weighs 700gms/ 1.5 lbs! It stands 10cms / 4" tall, is 12cms / 4¾" diameter and 15cms / 6" wide to the handle.
