This set of Vintage French Espresso Cups and Saucers, with Matching Cognac Glasses, were once promotional items for the famous « Bisquit » Cognac producer. Given to French cafes, in the 1960s, the promoters encouraged bartenders to serve their classic French espressos to customers in them to 'tempt' clients to the brand.
In France, it is not unusual to add alcohol/spirits to your coffee, an old fashion "pick-me-up"! at any time of day - even breakfast!
Perfect for serving « French coffee » (coffee + cognac) after dinner. They are a stylishly chic way to impress you dinner guests when you serve your digestif (after dinner drinks). They all carry the famous 'COGNAC Bisquit' logo.
The cups and saucers are made of white & brown glazed ceramic with the brand printed on both the cups & the saucers.
Each cup measures 6cms (2½") diameter and is 6cms (2½") height approx.
Each Saucer measures 13cms (5’’) diameter approx.
They are in very good vintage condition, no chips or cracks.
The cups stack neatly on top of each other for ease of storage.
They are really heavy! each cup/saucer combo weights 334 grams! (0.7lbs)
The taller two glasses stand 14cms (5½") tall and have a base wider than the body for stability, to stop them being easily toppled. The base is 6.5cms (2½") diameter. They are elegantly shaped with 'Bisquit' written in gold on the front of each glass.
The two shorter glasses are more traditionally 'bell' shaped cognac glasses and have the logo 'Bisquit COGNAC' etched onto the front of the glasses. At their widest they measure 7.5cms (3")
Here's a bit of history for you: Founded by Alexandre Bisquit in 1819, the house of 'Bisquit', with its home at the Château de Lignères by the banks of the Charente River, had a long-standing family tradition until the house was sold to Pernod Ricard in 1966. It is said that Bisquit Cognac was among the favourite cognacs of Winston Churchill and King George IV.
