This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded "Inky blue/sea green" tones. They are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect. There are works by two of France's most famous writers; Molière and Jean de la Fontaine to give your bookshelves added French Chic!
The five books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Les Femmes Savantes, Molière (1922 edition.) This book is 99 years old! Les Femmes Savantes (The Learned Ladies) is Molière's comedy, in five acts, written in verse. A satire on academic pretension, female education, and "préciosité". It was one of his most popular comedies and the last of his great plays in verse.
La Fontaine, Fables (1929 edition.) Jean de La Fontaine (8 September 1621 – 13 April 1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century.
La Tour de la France, par Deux Enfants, Devoir et Patrie. G. Bruno (1903 edition.) This is a famous French novel/geography/travel/school book. It was written by Augustine Fouillée (née Tuillerie) who used the pseudonym of G. Bruno. She was the wife of Alfred Jules Émile Fouillée. The book was widely used in the schools of the Third Republic, where it was influential for generations of children in creating a sense of a unified nation of France. Its success was such that it reached a circulation of 6 million copies in 1900. It was still used in schools until the 1950s.
Algèbra, Elémentaire, J. Pichot (1880 edition.) Algebraic Equations galore. If you love algebra then this book is for you!
Mémento Larousse, Encyclopédique & Illustré (1917 edition.) In amazing condition for it's age (it is 104 years old!) It is complete, with no missing or loose pages but the spine has become detached over the years. This enormous work covers so many topics, from the history of France to the workings of the combustion engine. Mathematical equations to cooking recipes, civil and moral codes, to verb conjugation and French Grammar. It has colorful world maps, political and geographic. There is even some sheet music and instructions for how to sketch and draw in perspective. It is truly fascinating.
The photographs show a very small selection of the 900 gravures (engravings), 90 tableaux (tables) and 82 cartes (charts/maps). The book itself is mesmerizing in the detail and information packed into its pages. The maps provide a fascinating insight into the world before the second world war and it is wonderful for comparing how much our knowledge of industrial practices, science and medicine have changed over the last 100 years. Once you pick it up it seems impossible to put it down again!
