This is a stunning set of five vintage French books in faded creamy beige tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There are works here by some of France's most famous writers, such as Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Baudelaire, Emile Zola and Flaubert to give your bookshelves added French chic!
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.
The five books are all distressed from years of genuine use, and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Hernani et Marion de Lorme - Victor Hugo (Hardcover c.1930 edition.) Victor Hugo (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. Hugo is considered to be one of the greatest and best-known French writers. This book contains some of his most famous, and controversial, works. Hernani, from 1830, was Hugo's play that marked the triumph of Romanticism over Classicism. It was Hugo who led a group of young poets and artists that virtually waged war with the traditionalists on the opening night of this play, creating a scandal that guaranteed the success of the work and the eventual success of the movement. Marion de Lorme, from 1828, a play in five acts. The play is written about the famous French courtesan of that name, who lived under the reign of Louis XIII. The play was first performed in 1831 at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, but was later prohibited by King Charles X.
Cours d'Arithmétique, Théorique et Pratique - H. Neveu (Hardcover 1922 edition.) A book full of fabulous old calculations of angles, spheres, cones and mathematical equations. Algebra, fractions, volumes, time, weights, measures and trigonometry all feature in this book.
La Henriade - Voltaire (Paperback 1926 edition.) Voltaire (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit. La Henriade is an epic poem, written in 1723. According to Voltaire himself, the poem concerns and was written in honour of the life of Henry IV of France, and is a celebration of his life.
Petite Anthologie du "Naturalisme" Flaubert, Zola, Huysmans. Critique et Morceaux Choisis - Léon Defoux. (Paperback 1929 edition.) Naturalism is a literary movement beginning in the late nineteenth century, similar to literary realism in its rejection of Romanticism, but distinct in its embrace of determinism, detachment, scientific objectivism, and social commentary. This book studies the movement through its most famous writers, such as Gustave Flaubert, Emile Zola, Huysmans, Daudet and Maupassant to name but a few!
Oeuvres Complètes de Charles Baudelaire (1948 edition.) Charles Pierre Baudelaire (9 April 1821 – 31 August 1867) was a French poet who also produced notable work as an essayist and art critic. This book contains his complete works.
To display them altogether you will need a minimum space of 12 cms/ 4¾" high x 18.5cms/ 7¼" long x 13.5cms/ 5¼" deep.
They weigh 1.8kgs/ 3.9lbs.
The books in this book bundle are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. Some of the pages and covers are slightly loose. One or two of the books have their first few pages uncut - they have been like this since publication - and are all the more charming for it. They have also gathered a few pencil marks, and names inside the front covers, over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
