They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft shades and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots. They make excellent film and photo props and would be ideal for a boho, or shabby chic, themed wedding as a table centerpiece decoration.
The five books are all distressed from years of genuine use, and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
Textes d'Etudes (Ancien et Moyen Français) R. Léon Wagner (Paperback 1964 edition.) A study of French writings from the middle ages.
Les Romans de Chrétien de Troyes, Tome III, Le Chevalier de la Charrete (Paperback 1975 edition.) Chrétien de Troyes was a French poet and trouvère known for his writing on Arthurian subjects, and for first writing of Lancelot, Percival and the Holy Grail. Chrétien's works represent some of the most highly regarded medieval literature.
Les Romans de Chrétien de Troyes, Eric et Enide (Paperback 1968 edition.) Erec and Enide is the first of Chrétien de Troyes' five romance poems, completed around 1170. It is one of three completed works by the author. Erec and Enide tells the story of their marriage, and the journey they go on to restore Erec's reputation as a knight, after he remains inactive for too long. Consisting of about 7000 lines of Old French, the poem is one of the earliest known Arthurian romances in any language.
Cinq-Mars, Tome I, Alfred de Vigny (Hardcover c.1923 edition.) Alfred Victor, Comte de Vigny (27 March 1797 – 17 September 1863) was a French poet and early leader of French Romanticism. In 1826 he published this first important historical novel in French, Cinq-Mars, based on the life of Louis XIII's favorite Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars, who conspired against the Cardinal de Richelieu.
Anthologie de la Poésie Française, Max-Pol Fouchet (1955 edition)
This is one of the most gorgeous old books I've come across, the cover itself is wonderful with the surnames of famous French writers and poets, such as 'Hugo, Moliére, La Fontaine, Corneille, Baudelaire and Vigny' across the front. The inside cover is a warm gold and the layout of the pages is delightful, 'French Script' typeface has been used for the titles of the poems, making it wonderfully 'arty'.
These five books have, over their long life, gathered names inside the front covers and pencilled scholarly notes, remarks and comments, on the pages, over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic. Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
To display them altogether you will need a minimum space of 11cms/ 4¼" high x 21cms/ 8¼" long x 14cms/ 5½" deep.
They weigh 1.6kgs/ 3.5 lbs.
