This is a stunning set of six antique French books in faded red tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect.
The perfect interior decorators 'o'bjets d'art' they will add a splash of color to neutral rooms. They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, mantelpiece, sideboard, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft tones and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots.
This 'red' book bundle is made up of six French, antiquarian school books, very collectible and increasingly hard to find.
They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The six books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
La Première Année d'Arithmétique, cours moyen - P. Leyssenne (1902 edition.) Fractions, mental arithmetic, volumes, weights, measures and geometry all feature in this school book for primary school children, aged 9 -11 years.
Cours Primaire de Grammaire Française, cours supérieur et complementaire - J. Dussouchet (1916 edition.) Published by France's famous Parisian publisher 'Librarie Hachette.' An amazing book, packed full of language lessons and exercises, analysis and verb conjugations for 11- 13 year old children.
Sciences Naturelles du Brevet Elémentaire, 1ere Année - L.-J. Dalbais et Paul Chauvet (1934 edition.) This book is amazing, once you pick it up it's impossible to put down. It has wonderful dissected illustrations of plants, flowers and mushrooms and chapters on Geology and Botany.
Cours Primaire de Grammaire Française, cours élémentaire - J. Dussouchet. Published by France's famous Parisian publisher 'Librarie Hachette.' This is the previous book to the one above for 6-8 year olds.
Cours de Langue Française, cours élémentaire - C.H Maquet, Léon Flot et L. Roy (1913 edition.) Also published by France's famous Parisian publisher 'Librarie Hachette.' This book has grammar and vocabulary exercises along with verb conjugations and elocution exercises.
Histoire de France, cours supérieur, 1ère année, certificat d'études - E. Lavisse (1941 edition.) This book is a guide to French history from Prehistoric times through to the 1st World War of 1914-1918. It covers in great detail times such as the Gallo-Roman period, the Crusades, Middle Ages, the 100 Years War and the French Revolution to name but a few.
If you would like to display the books in a bundle, tied up with the string (like the photos), then you would need a minimum space of 9cms/ 3½" high x 19cms/ 7½" long x 13.5cms/ 5¼" deep.
They weigh 1.4kgs/ 3lbs.
The more book bundles I compile the more difficult it gets to part with them as each set is so steeped in history and life that they 'feel' alive to me.
Thank you for looking and I hope you enjoy seeing these books as much as I have enjoyed finding them.
