This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded blue tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There's a huge volume of Racine's Theatre works in this bundle, along with two rare volumes of 'Le Secrétaire Pratique' to give your bookshelves added French Chic!
They can be used as photo and film props, as well as table centrepieces for boho weddings and shabby chic displays. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The five books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Théâtre Choisis de Racine, G. Lanson (c.1927 edition.) An enormous and comprehensive guide to the writing of Jean Racine (22 December 1639 – 21 April 1699.) Racine was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille. In this huge book you will find all of his famous tragedies and comedies, such as Esther (1689), Phédre (1677), Les Plaideurs (1668), Iphigénie (1674), Andromaque (1667), Athalie (1691) to name but a few! The plays are reproduced, act by act, with notes and commentaries and questions.
Petite Histoire Générale, cours supèrieur, Désiré Blanchet (1897 edition.) This book has a lovely illustration on the cover of a Roman goddess reading to two children. It is a guide to history from the Egyptians and Phoenicians through the middle ages, the Rennaissance and the French Revolution to Empires of the early 1800's, for children aged 8-11.
La Morale, cours moyen et supèrieur, O. Pavette (1906 edition.) The moral and civil code of France. How to behave in family and society for school children.
Le Secrétaire Pratique ou Traité Complet de la Corresponance, MM. Durand et Meslins (1933 and 1941 editions.) These two books are a complete guide to administration of the early 1900's. How to word letters (everything from condolances, invitations and congratulations to petitions to ministers, military officials, solicitors and directors.) It's all here, how to write testaments, wills, and letters for private affairs. These are the books which ordered polite society of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Truly fascinating and still useful today! These two books have a 'miniature front cover' as the label on the spines.
If you wish to display the books in a bundle/stack with string then you would need a minimum space of 17cms / 6¾" high x 19cms / 7½ long x 12cms / 4¾" deep.
Altogether they weigh 1.7kgs / 3.75 lbs!
