I was so excited to find these plates as they are really unusual. Made in the 1970's by the famous French GIEN pottery, founded in 1821, these plates are now very rare and collectible.
What a great way to learn about French Cheeses - a great excuse to try them all!
These plates will add a real 'talking point' to your dinner party and also would make the perfect gift for your host or hostess, a perfect house warming present, alongside a bottle of wine and a selection of French cheeses.
The set consists of:
Six round plates each illustrated with a different type of French cheese. The detailed illustrations show the cheeses alongside the correct accompanying drink to serve with them, red or white wine or beer. Fabulous colourful tablecloths, plates, knives, bread, and grapes appear in the backgrounds. They are wonderful to look at.
They have a certain 'rustic charm', being earthenware terracotta, and so have a French provincial 'feel' that would make them ideal for a farmhouse country kitchen.
They Measure 17cms (6½") diameter.
The Designs are:
Roquefort: A sheep's milk cheese from the south of France, it is one of the world's best known blue cheeses. The cheese is white, tangy, crumbly and slightly moist, with distinctive veins of blue mold. It has no rind; the exterior is edible and slightly salty. Roquefort is known in France as the king of cheeses. It is shown with a bottle of Bordeaux Red Wine.
Camembert: Illustrated with the box marked 'Fabrique en Normadie. Camebert is a soft, creamy, surface-ripened cow's milk cheese. It was first made in the late 18th century at Camembert, Normandy, in northern France. The illustration also has a bottle of France's famous Chateauneuf du Pape Wine as an accompaniment.
Port- Salut: A semi-soft pasteurised cow's milk cheese from Pays de la Loire, France, with a distinctive orange rind and a mild flavour.
Coulommiers: A soft ripened cheese from Coulommiers in the Seine-et-Marne department of France. It is made from cow's milk, and is usually in the shape of a disc with white, edible Penicillium candidum rind. The illustration shows a rustic terracotta jug of 'Vin de Pays'.
Carre de l'Est: A French cheese originating from Lorraine. Its place of origin and square shape give it its name (literally "square of the East").
Emmental: A yellow, medium-hard Swiss cheese that originated in the area around Emmental, Canton Bern. It has a savory, but mild taste and holes!
They are all in perfect condition with no visible chips or cracks, and carry the famous 'Grès de GIEN FRANCE' logo on the undersides.
