WORKING 1953 Pye Valve Radio. 1950s Radio with Walnut Veneered Wooden Case.
This is a 1953 P75 Valve Table Radio, AC mains, LW, MW and SW. Walnut veneered wooden case. Manufactured by PYE of Cambridge in 1953. This five valve radio is housed in a walnut veneered wooden cabinet. It has a three way switch knob, mounted on the right hand side of the cabinet, to allow selection of the medium, long and short wavebands. It also has an internal frame airial fitted for reception of local stations. Did you know the retail selling price for this model was £15, 2 shillings and 1 penny + purchase tax. The average working wage in 1953 was £6 for a 47 hour week!
It is still working*, we have "tuned in" to the BBC and some French and German channels on the LW frequency, with plenty of lovely "static" for the full 1950s listening experience!
The "station select" light works, so the front panel lights up.
We think it's the perfect bookshelf accent piece for a 1950s home.
It is huge and heavy, weighing 6kgs/ 13.2 lbs!
It measures 41cms/16" long x 18cms/ 7" deep x 31cms/12" tall.
It has a few surface scratches and marks on the case, consistent with it's 70 year age, but nothing whatsoever to detract from it's charm.
A wonderful, rare and collectible, radio for mid-century home styling.
It is currently fitted with a French plug, that may need changing to comply with your own electrical systems.
