This is a set of six volumes of Voltaire's "Correspondence".
These books are from the "Oeuvres Completes de Voltaire", published between 1825 - 1832.
Voltaire's complete works or "Oeuvres Completes" consisted of 100 volumes. This listing is for six volumes, all in French text, and dated between M DCCC XXV (1825) and M DCCC XXXII (1832.)
Almost 200 years old these books are very rare and collectible, they have leather spines and marbleised cardboard covers. The patina on these books is amazing. The books are all completely readable, with no loose pages.
They are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect and add an extra "French chic" to your collection!
These six books are in genuine antique condition, as you can see from the photos, the spines are delicate and have sustained some damage, and have delaminated. The pages have many "age spots" and edge discoloration which adds to their charm and authenticity. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
They need to be handled with respect for their age and condition. They are perfectly readable, with no loose pages. The spines are crumbly and dusty, consistent with their age and use.
Most importantly they have that "old book smell" reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
Voltaire (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit. He was a critic of Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic Church. He advocated freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and separation of church and state. A versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form. This includes plays, poems, novels, essays and historical and scientific works. He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets. He was an outspoken advocate of civil liberties, despite the risk this placed him in under the strict censorship laws of the time. As a satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma and the French institutions of his day.
Voltaire’s correspondence has been called his masterpiece, but he did not systematically keep copies of the letters he sent and seldom kept those he received. In a sense, it was his first posthumous editors who, in assembling 4,500 letters, "created" his correspondence. Voltaire engaged in an enormous amount of private correspondence during his life, totalling over 20,000 letters. These books contain some of the first 4,500 of Voltaire's letters to be catalogued. They include letters to people like Catherine the Great, Frederick II, King of Prussia, Le Duc de Richelieu, Le Marquis d'Argenson and Le Comte d'Argental to name but a few!
The "Correspondance" volumes here are:
Volume 73 (Tome 7), Volume 77 (Tome 10), Volume 78 (Tome 11), Volume 79 (Tome 12), Volume 93 (Tome 26) and Volume 94 (Tome 27.)
Each book measures 21cms/ 8¼" long x 14cms/ 5½" wide x 3cms/ 1¼" deep and weighs approx. 600gms/ 1.3 lbs.
