A set of six volumes of classic literature, in French, dated 1846 - 1871.
Over 150 years old these books are very rare and collectible, they are hardcover editions with wonderful, marbleized, covers. Each one is stunning in its own right and together they make an incredible impact.
The patina is outstanding, they are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect.

The titles are:

"Cinq-Mars", Alfred de Vigny (1871 edition.) This 1826 work is a historical novel centered around the conspiracy of Louis XIII’s favourite, the Marquis de Cinq-Mars, against the Cardinal de Richelieu. This book has amazing, "pull-out" letters, inside the front and back covers. Copies of Cardinal Richlieu's correspondance from 1632 and the Marquis Cinq-Mars, from 1640. They have sustained a small amount of damage, over their long life, but nothing whatsoever to detract from their beauty. Perfectly readable still.

"Thèatre Grec" d'Eschyle, de Sophocle, d'Euripide. (1846 edition.) A wonderful book of Greek Theatre, translated into French by Eugène Magne. It contains Euripides tradgedy "Iphigenia in Aulis", alongside Sophocles's tradgedies "Oedipus Rex", "Electra", "Philoctetes", "Oedipus at Colonus", "Ajax", "Antigone", and "The Trachiniae." There are also four tradgedies by Aeschylus; the trilogy "Oresteia", "Prometheus Bound", "The Persians", "The Suppliants" and "Seven Against Thebes."

"Les Grimpeurs de Rochers", suite du chasseur de plantes. Le Captaine Mayne-Reid (1865 edition.) Thomas Mayne Reid (4 April 1818 – 22 October 1883) was an Irish-American novelist, who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). His many works on American life describe colonial policy in the American colonies, the horrors of slave labour and the lives of American Indians.

"Une Parisienne Sous La Fondre" Mlle. Zénaïde Fleuriot. (1871 edition.) Zénaïde-Marie-Anne Fleuriot (28 October 1829 – 19 December 1890), was a French novelist. She wrote eighty three novels, all aimed at young women. This book was written in 1871, the year this book was published!

"Elizabeth aux Cheveux D'Or", Tomes I and II. E. Marlitt (1870 editions.) E. Marlitt is the pseudonym of Eugenie John (December 5, 1825 – 1887), a popular German novelist. This novel "Goldelse", written in 1866, marked the beginning of her celebrity, its readers attracted by its graphic and poetic delineations of German life. These two tomes contain the complete story.
Here is a brief resumé for you:
"Gold Elsie", Elizabeth Faber, the Gold Elsie of the story, so called from her sunny hair, is the daughter of a forest clerk, whose ancestry is at first wrapped in doubt, but who, in the course of the story, is explained to be a lineal descendant of the noble family of Von Greswits. Leaving Berlin on account of poverty, the family retire to a ruined castle called Nordeck, in the Thuringian Mountains, an inheritance left to Gold Elsie’s mother by its late owner, a distant relative whose hand she had refused. Through her wonderful musical talent, Elsie becomes acquainted with the family at Castle Lindhof, the aristocracy of the neighborhood; and there is played out the usual love story, with its misunderstandings, reconciliations, and final happy ending. The hero is Rudolph von Walde, the owner of the castle, while the villain is Émile Hollfeld. The nobility of virtue and the nobility of birth are strongly contrasted in this story; while the “simple faith” which is more than “Norman blood” is given its due meed of praise.
