Six 1800s Antiquarian Books. Classic Literature by Voltaire & Madame de Sevigné.
This is a stunning set of six rare antiquarian books in faded brown tones. Dating from the 1800's.
The oldest book in this stack is 215 years old, the newest is 117 years old. There are two 199 year old books by Voltaire in this stack, to give your bookshelves added "French Chic"!
Their patina is outstanding, each one is stunning in its own right and together they make an incredible impact.
There books are rare and collectible with oodles of "shelf appeal"!
These six books are in genuine antique condition, as you can see from the photos, the spines are delicate and have sustained some damage. The pages have "age spots" and edge discoloration which adds to their charm and authenticity. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
They need to be handled with respect for their age and condition.
They have, over their long life, gathered pencilled scholarly notes, remarks and comments, on the pages, over the years. Most importantly they have that "old book smell" reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The titles are:
Explication des Evangiles des Dimanches, et de quelques-unes des principales Fêtes de l'année, tome second. C.-G. De La Luzerne (1807 edition.)
Just one peek inside the cover of this book tells you, its age. The typeface and print ooze style and authenticity. For its 215 years it is in remarkable condition, a few of the pages are loose , it is delicately scuffed and unbelievable beautiful. It is an explanation of the Gospels and some of the main festivities of the year.
Lettres de Madame de Sevigné, Tome 1 (1860 edition.) Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné (5 February 1626 – 17 April 1696), also widely known as Madame de Sévigné was a French aristocrat, remembered for her letter-writing. Most of her letters, celebrated for their wit and vividness, were addressed to her daughter, Françoise-Marguerite de Sévigné. She is revered in France as one of the great icons of French 17th-century literature. This 162 year old book contains many of her letters.
Les Sept Codes Français, précédées de la Charte Constitutionnelle modifée. L. Rondonneau (1831 edition.) In amazing condition for it's 191 years, the first two pages of this book are loose but it is intact. This huge tome is a law book, legal manual, on the seven French codes, preceded by the amended Constitutional Charter.
Oeuvres Completes de Voltaire, Mélanges Littéraires, Tommes II et III. (1823 editions.) Voltaire (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit. He was a critic of Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic Church. He advocated freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and separation of church and state. A versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form. This includes plays, poems, novels, essays and historical and scientific works. He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets. He was an outspoken advocate of civil liberties, despite the risk this placed him in under the strict censorship laws of the time. As a satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma and the French institutions of his day. These two volumes are almost 200 years old and contain a small selection of his notes, remarks and correspondance on a range of subjects.
Handbuch für den deutichen unterricht, Prof Karl Bone (1905 edition.) This enormous tome is a German handbook for teaching German. It has works my many, many famous writers, including, of course, Goethe!
