Vallauris, 1960s, Majolica "Twisted Shells" Seafood Platter.

This is a very rare 1960's, vintage mid century platter/ fruit bowl.
It is clearly marked "Vallauris" on the glazed underside.
The small scenic town of Vallauris is in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes -Côte d'Azur region of South-Eastern France.
It became world famous when Picasso lived there in the 1940's and 1950's and Majolica from Vallauris is celebrated for its beautiful glazes and extraordinary shapes.
This bowl has been hand-painted in an expressive mid-century modern, highly textured design that typically characterizes the region’s pottery.
The brown base glaze of this plate has been overlaid with a gorgeous mixture of turquoise/white and creamy brown "foam" that mingles with "fiery orange/red" surrounding glaze on the outer edges.
It is shaped as two conch shells - twisted together on opposite sides and has a pronounced, fluted edge. The lines of the "twirls" and where the two shells join together form raised segments that are incredibly tactile and integral to the design.
Perfect as a seafood platter for a table centerpiece and equally beautiful as a fruit bowl.
Anyone who collects majolica glazed mid century pottery would love this wonderful piece.
It is large measuring 39cms/ 15¼" x 19cms/ 7½" and is 7cms/ 2¾" deep. It weighs 1.3kgs/ 2.9lbs.
It has one very, very tiny graze in the edge at one end, which is not noticeable at normal viewing distance and in no way detracts from the beauty or quality of this wonderful item.
A beautiful piece of vintage Vallauris pottery! ..............We love it!.................
