Designed to give your bookshelves added "French chic", this is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded grey tones. They are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect. They can be used as photo and film props, as well as table centrepieces for boho weddings and shabby chic displays.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft tones and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots.
The five books are all distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
Memento de Sténographie, Principes et Règles- Exercises Gradués - Paul Fleury et Ernest Roy (1928 hardcover edition.) This is a fascinating book on shorthand. It is packed full of the symbols and marks once used to write with speed and brevity, before the invention of recording and dictation machines. In the 1920's, when this book was published, shorthand was considered an essential part of secretarial training and police work and was useful for journalists.
Oeuvres Choisies de Paul de Kock, Un Tourlourou (hardcover c.1890 edition.) Charles Paul de Kock (May 21, 1793 – April 27, 1871) was a French novelist. This is his novel from 1837. This book has a gorgeous Art Nouveau cover, it is loose but still complete and perfectly readable.
Physique et Chimie, cours élémentaire classes de 3ème des lycées et collèges. J. Lamirand, R. Annequin et C. Chamfy (hardcover 1941 edition.) Physics and chemistry lessons for 14-16 year old children. This book is divided into two halves, the first for Physics. It covers an exciting range of topics on weights, density & pressure, heat, light, sound and electricity to name but a few! The second half, Chemistry, covers gases and liquids, distillation and fermentation processes for alcohol and acids. It has sections on industrial methods of soap and candle making too!
Histoire de France, première année, 1500 - 1774, P. Hallynck et M. Brunet (hardcover 1933 edition.) French history from the beginning of the 16th century to 1774. This book covers everything from the formation of the states of Occidental Europe, through the Renaissance period, the wars of religion, and the reigns of the French monarchies, from Charles VIII through to Louis XV. A comprehensive guide with wonderful illustrations, maps and images to bring the text alive.
Histoire de France, troisième année, 1852 - 1935, P. Hallynck et M. Brunet (hardcover 1935 edition.) This book is a comprehensive guide to France's history, from the middle of the 19th century (the second empire) to the first world war. It also has wonderful illustrations, maps and images to illustrate the richness of France's history.
If you wish to display the books in a bundle/stack with string (like the photos) then you would need a minimum space of 11cms/ 4¼" high x 20cms/ 7¾" long x 14cms/ 5½" deep.
