This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded 'inky' blue tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. There are works by some of France's most famous writers; Racine, Montesquieu, Bruyère and a copy of the Fables of La Fontaine to give your bookshelves added French Chic!
This 'midnight/Inky blue' book bundle is made up of very collectible and increasingly hard to find books. They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The five books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Fables, La Fontaine, R. Radouant (1929 edition.) Jean de La Fontaine (8 September 1621 – 13 April 1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. This book contains all of his famous fables, including our personal favourite; The Fox and the Crow.
Extraits de L'Esprit des Lois et Ouvres Diverses, Montesquieu (c. 1923 edition.) Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (18 January 1689 – 10 February 1755), generally referred to as simply Montesquieu, was a French judge, man of letters, and political philosopher. "The Spirit of Laws" is his treatise on political theory, as well as a pioneering work in comparative law, first published in 1748t.
La Bruyère, Les Caractères (c. 1925 edition.) Jean de La Bruyère (16 August 1645 – 11 May 1696) was a French philosopher and moralist, who was noted for his satire. The "Caractères", a translation of Theophrastus, was first published in 1885.
Théâtre, Racine, Tomes I and II (1931 editions) Jean Racine (22 December 1639 – 21 April 1699) was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille. In these two volumes you will find some of his famous tragedies and comedies, such as La Thébaïde (1664), Les Plaideurs (1668), Andromaque (1667), Britannicus (1669) and Bérénice (1670) to name but a few! The plays are reproduced, act by act, with notes and commentaries.
To display them altogether, in a bundle, you will need a minimum space of 13cms/ 5" high x 18cms/ 7" long x 12cms/ 4¾" deep.
