This is a stunning set of five antiquarian French & Latin books in faded brown tones. They are "aged to perfection" and will give you an instant "old library" effect. They have serious "shelf appeal"!
The five books are all hardcover editions, distressed from years of genuine use.
The titles are:
"Paroissien Romain", an antique roman catholic missal, published in 1860 by Alfred Mame et Fils, Tours.
This book is absolutely stunning, with delicate tissue paper sheets, that protect the exquisite illustrations.
This 163 year old book is in amazing condition. It is missing it's little metal bar, that would have held it shut, across the two metal lobes, which are still attached. None of this detracts whatsoever from it's allure and charm. It "feel's" wonderful.
The photo gives you a small glimpse of it's text and illustrations. In Latin and French. It contains "Les Offices de Tous les Dimanches et des Principales Fêtes de L'année." (Sunday Services and Principle Christian celebrations.)
"Offices de la Quinzaine de Paques, a l'usage de Rome." This book is a guide to the services and formalities for the Easter fortnight. Dating from 1856 it was also published by Alfred Mame et Fils, Tours. It's text is also in both Latin and French.
"Manuel de Piété, a l'usage des éléves du sacre-coeur." This devotional manual dates from 1862 and is a students guide.
"Résurrection/ Anna Karénine", Leon Tolstoï (edition date unknown.) This book contains two novels. "Resurrection", first published in 1899, the last novel written by Leo Tolstoy (1828 – 1910) a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time and "Anna Karenina", first published in book form in 1878. Widely considered to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written.
"Morale en Action Des Bourbons", par le chevalier Barny de Romanet. Published in 1824, this 200 year old book "Morality in Action of the Bourbons" is a rare and collectible book looking at "The Bourbons", a familial dynasty dating from the thirteenth century. The Bourbons were monarchs of France in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries and again briefly in the nineteenth century. They became monarchs in Spain in the seventeenth century and are still Kings of Spain and Grand Dukes of Luxembourg today. Few families have had such an impact on Europe's political life.
These five antique books have, over their long life, developed "age spots" and page edge discoloration; which adds to their charm and authenticity. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
They are still perfectly readable, they just need to be handled with respect for their age and condition.
Most importantly they have that "old book smell" reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting
To display in a bundle, tied with twine, you will need a minimum space of 17cms/ 6 ¾" high x 18cms/ 7 " long x 12cms/ 4¾" deep.
They weigh 1.5kgs/ 3.3 lbs.
