This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded "midnight/dark" blue tones. There are some really collectible antiquarian books in this stack, all dating from the 1800s, this stack is the perfect gift for book lovers the world over.
The five books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Cours de Littérature, Abrégé du Lycée, Tome Premier, J.F. La Harpe (1824 edition.) This 198-year-old book is in amazing condition. It has selected works by many of France's most famous writers, such as Molière, Corneille, La Fontaine and Racine. It starts with studies of the Greek tragedies and philosophies, through to plays and theatre in the time of Louis XIV. There is a small edge "nibble" missing from the bottom right of the front cover of this book.
Ouvres Complètes de La Fontaine, Tome Second (1861 edition.) A book packed full of works by Jean de La Fontaine (8 September 1621 – 13 April 1695.) A fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. This book contains many of his letters, plays, odes and elegies.
Eléments d'Arithmétique, avec de nombreux exercises (1891 edition.) Fractions, mental arithmetic, volumes, weights, measures and geometry all feature in this book. Exercises, equations, problems and theories in maths.
Buffon, Oeuvres Choisies, Félix Hémon (1888 edition.) Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (7 September 1707 – 16 April 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including two prominent French scientists Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. This book has some lovely old handwritten notes tucked inside the front cover, I've left them there as part of the book's history.
Le Nouveau Médecin des Familles, des maladies avec les moyens de les guérir. Dr. J. Pelletan (1886 edition.) The New Family Doctor, diseases with the means to cure them, is a huge book of fascinating medical treatments from the late 1800's. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it is also an interesting insight into medical knowledge of the time and is wonderful for comparing how much treatments and practices have changed over the last 136 years. Anyone who is interested in medicine would adore this book. It would make a thoughtful gift for any doctor or graduating medic.
