This is a pretty set of six, vintage 'GIEN Anémones' tea cups and saucers with a matching milk jug and sugar bowl with lid.
If you are decorating a country cottage dresser or love the idea of recreating a 'traditional afternoon cream tea' for a summer garden party then this set is for you. Such a pretty way to serve tea, alongside your scones with jam and cream or slices of Victoria sponge.
Ideal for 'shabby chic tea parties', their neutral color means they will look pretty with old roses and other vintage prints. They have an understated elegance which is refined and light.
Glazed in antique white with a motif that has three delicate anemones in mauve, red and subtle, pale yellow on two-tone green leaves.
The saucers are 14.5cms/ 5¾" diameter.
The cups are 8.5cms/ 3 ¼"diameter at the top and 4.5cms/ 1¾" deep.
The milk jug stands 14cms/ 5 ½" tall, and is 12cms/ 4¾" at its widest.
The sugar bowl stand 6cms/ 2¼" tall and is 13cms/ 5" wide.
Altogether they weigh 2.2kgs/ 4.8lbs.
They are all in gorgeous condition, with no scratches, chips or cracks. There is some very slight tea staining to the underside of a couple of the cups (where they sit on the saucer) and the saucers have a slightly 'chippy' texture at the edges, this is due to the manufacturing process being of a ‘rough’ glaze style that produces glazing flaws.
The name anemone comes from the Greek word for "windflower." According to Greek mythology, the anemone sprang from Aphrodite's tears as she mourned the death of Adonis.
Thought to bring luck and protect against evil, legend has it that when the anemone closes its petals, it's a signal that rain is approaching.
Still other mythology connects the anemone to magical fairies, who were believed to sleep under the petals after they closed at sunset. Perhaps it's because of this magical and prophetic tales that today in the language of flowers, anemones represent anticipation.
Gien was founded in 1821 and is today the number one producer of the highest quality earthenware in France.
