The set consists of six 'flat fish shaped' plates measuring 29cms (11½") diameter to the head and tail. They are glazed white, over a terracotta base, with fin, head, tail and 'fish scale' borders. They are divided into two segments/sections by a raised line two-thirds of the way up. The fish emerges from the glossy glaze in relief.
Wonderfully tactile and subtly elegant, stylishly understated.
They are all in perfect condition, with no chips, cracks or scratches, which considering the age of this set is remarkable!
They are chunky too - weighing 700gms (1.5 lbs) each!
These plates look great with any table setting as their clean, fresh white look gives them a 'timeless' sophistication.
The pottery factory in Niderviller, is one of the oldest in Lorraine region of France, and is the only one in the region to have manufactured porcelain with 'Sarreguemines' earthenware. This fish plate set dates from the 1960's and each one has been 'hand painted' (it states this clearly in the mark on the base 'Peint Main') so each one is completely unique and original.
They are collectors pieces, now very sought after and hard to find, especially in large sets.
