This large, French, stoneware olive oil jar is a wonderful decorative item for any French country kitchen or provincial farmhouse interior.
'Aged to perfection' the drip-type glaze is rich in varied earth tones with a slight iridescence to the glaze from the kiln firing, which sometimes creates small glaze imperfections. This type of 'Digoin Gréspots' oil jar is very collectible, each one being individually hand glazed from a unique sandstone paste of the Loire Valley. No two are identical, making them unique and individual, exuding rustic charm!
Used for the storage and transportation of olive and walnut oils, keeping them cool, this smaller version of the larger jars was designed for daily use, it being the perfect size for kitchen shelf / larder storage. Oil would be decanted into this jar from larger 'urns' in the house cellar.
A delightful olive oil jar with all the charm of French vintage rural life. The perfect gift for lovers of rustic pottery. It has many years if service yet to offer.
It is in excellent condition, there are no chips or cracks. It is perfectly clean and usable. Utterly charming, it is authentic and original. It will be easy to fit either a cork stopper or tap cork into the urn.
