This is French earthenware urn, which comes complete with it's 'Norman head' stopper (in the shape of a man in his nightcap!) It is a wonderful decorative item for any French country kitchen or provincial farmhouse interior.
'Aged to perfection' the patina of its 'rough' glaze style oozes rustic charm. These type of jars are very popular in the Normandy region of the north of France, famous for its *'Calvados' apple brandy.
*Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples. The fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider. It is then distilled into eau de vie. After two years of ageing in oak casks, it can be sold as Calvados. The longer it is aged, the smoother the drink becomes. Usually, the maturation goes on for several years.
This bottle has an elegant shape, narrow neck and tapered body. Hand thrown jars, such as this one, are increasingly rare to source and are becoming collectors pieces.
It would make an excellent gift for a friend or host/hostess filled with your own home-made cider, brandy or sloe gin. A stylish way to present your homemade Liqueur!
Equally as practical for storing olive and walnut oils!
This urn has all the charm of French vintage rural life. The perfect gift for lovers of rustic pottery.
Solid and sturdy, it weighs 1.2kgs/ 2.6lb!
It stands 25cms / 9 ¾" tall, is 9cms / 3½" diameter (at the base) 18cms/ 7" wide to the handle. The opening is 2.5cms / 1". Please note that it has a used 'vintage' cork inside the 'head stopper' that fits snugly to the opening, making a watertight seal.
It is in excellent condition, still watertight and clean. Utterly charming, it has odd 'dints' and undulations in the clay but no chips or cracks, just a few marks, consistent with its age and use, nothing at all to detract from its beauty or functionality, it is authentic and original.
