It measures 47cms/18½" long and is 23.5cms/9¼", at its widest. It weighs 1.1kgs/2.4lbs. It is in pristine, perfect condition, with no chips, scratches or cracks.
Pornic is a commune in South-Eastern Brittany, in western France and "La Faïencerie" in Pornic produces an extremely wide range of earthenware. The pottery is a family enterprise founded in 1947 and specializes in hand painted ceramics, like this beautiful platter.
The rich yellow ochre base glaze of this platter has been "spotted" with a "foam" like layer of white "spots" and then a thicker deep bronze/sepia glaze has been "spread", into the center, to form the leaves. The stems and veins have been drawn in midnight blue/inky lines that merge and spread giving it subtle definition and a textured surface. You can "feel" the delicacy with which the potter has applied the brush strokes. It's very rare and collectible.
On the underside it is marked MBFA Pornic, Peint à la Main (Manufacture Bretonne de Faïences Artistiques (M.B.F.A.)
