This is a fabulous vintage 'Tête de Cuvée, Vouvray' Crémant/Champagne ice bucket /wine cooler from the 1970's.
Now iconic and very collectible these ice buckets were a promotional item, never for sale to the general public, given to restaurants, bars and bistros all over France to promote this brand of 'Tête de Cuvée, Vouvray' a popular Champagne alternative.
The phrase 'Tête de Cuvée' translates from French as "head blend." It refers to the top sparkling wine blend within a given Champagne house or region. Vouvray is a French wine region in the Loire Valley. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) is dedicated almost exclusively to Chenin Blanc. Vouvray produces more than a million cases of wine a year. Vouvray Sparkling wines are made according to the traditional method and can either be pétillant (semi-sparkling) or mousseux (fully sparkling).
The front of the bucket bears the logo of the 'Vouvray Winegrowers Celler' - 'Cave des Viticulteurs du Vouvray, Chateau de Vaudenuits.' It is in excellent condition and, considering its age, there is very little damage to this bucket. It has obviously seen some action in French bars and bistros over the years but is still in remarkably good condition. It has no major dents, just odd 'dints'. It has scratches across the surface, consistent with use and some discoloration on the inside, from years of holding ice and water, but it has many, many years of service still to offer.
It has sturdy handles in an art deco inspired 'fan' design, making it easy to carry.
The bucket stands 20cms (7¾") tall and is tapered measuring 12.5cms (5") diameter at the bottom and 20cms (7¾") diameter at the top. It is lightweight at 300gms/10½ ozs.
I have left this bucket exactly as I found it, without cleaning it because I love the authentic patina of its vintage appearance.
