This is a vintage French terracotta wine cooler. Perfect for Summer drinks outdoors. It would make a great gift for a host/hostess filled with their favorite bottle.
Charming and rustic, it has been stamped with an indentation of the French city of Avignon before firing, so that the beautiful outline of Avignon cathedral, and Bridge of Avignon, sits across the front.
It's one of the most stylish rustic, wine coolers we've ever come across.
Avignon, a city in southeastern France’s Provence region, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes. It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. Avignon Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms d'Avignon) is world famous and instantly recognisable. The Pont Saint-Bénézet , also known as the Pont (bridge) d'Avignon, is the famous medieval bridge of the town, first constructed between 1177 and 1185.
These wine coolers are very effective during Summer to keep your white wine or rosé chilled. It can also be used in Winter to keep your red wine at the correct room temperature.
There are two ways to use it:
For chilling white wine and rosé:
Soak the wine cooler in cold water for about 7 minutes. The clay will darken as it absorbs the moisture, empty the water and place your favorite bottle of chilled wine in the cooler. The evaporation process will keep your wine cold for 3/4 hours!
For maintaining red wine at the 'idéale température':
Once you have warmed your red wine to the correct room temperature simply place it into the wine cooler and it will remain at the same temperature throughout the meal.
It stands 21.5cms/8½" tall and is 13cms/5¼" diameter, 14cms/5½" at the upper rim.
There is no damage at all to the terracotta, no chips, or cracks. It has a couple of light marks on the outside of the cooler, consistent with use (see images).
It weighs 1.4kgs/ 3lbs!
