This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded grey/blue tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect, and your bookshelves added French Chic!
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft greys and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots.
This 'grey' book bundle is made up of French, antiquarian books, very collectible and increasingly hard to find. They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
These books are all distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose.
The titles are:
Contes d'une Vielle Fille, Mme. E. de Girardin (hardcover 1885 edition.) This book has the most gorgeous Art Nouveau cover, an original from' La Belle Époque.' I have photographed the back cover of this book too, as it's so gorgeous and typical of the style of the late 1800's.
Récits Andalous, Juan Valera (hardcover 1879 edition.) This book is 141 years old, beautiful to display.
Le Repentir de Marion, Arsène Houssaye (hardcover 1888 edition.) This novel is also in amazing condition for its 132 year age!, simply stunning.
Histoire de France, troisième année, 1852 - 1935, P. Hallynck et M. Brunet (hardcover 1935 edition.) This book is a comprehensive guide to France's history, from the middle of the 19th century (the second empire) to the first world war. It has wonderful illustrations, maps and images to bring the text alive.
Histoire de la Peinture Française au XVIII siecle (1700 -1800), Alfred Leroy (Paperback 1934 edition.) A history of French painting, with images, from the 18th century.
If you wish to display the books in a bundle/stack with twine then you would need a minimum space of 12.5cms / 5" high x 21cms / 8¼" long x 14cms / 5½" deep.
They weigh 1.7kgs / 3.75 lbs altogether.
