Designed to give your bookshelves added 'French chic', this is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded turquoise/sea green/inky blue tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. They can be used as photo and film props, as well as table centrepieces for boho weddings and shabby chic displays.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser. The covers have faded with time to subtle, dusky, soft turquoise, 'sea' greens/blues and the pages are yellowed with age, with age spots.
This book bundle is made up of French, antiquarian school books and classics, very collectible and increasingly hard to find. They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The five books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose:
The titles are:
Lettres Choisis, Madame de Sévigné - J. - R. Chevaillier et Pierre Audiat (1927 edition.) Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné (5 February 1626 – 17 April 1696) was a French aristocrat, remembered for her letter-writing. Most of her letters, celebrated for their wit and vividness, were addressed to her daughter. She is revered in France as one of the great icons of French 17th-century literature. This book contains a selection of these letters.
Théatre Choisi de Corneille (1910 edition.) This book contains six works by Pierre Corneille (6 June 1606 – 1 October 1684) who was a French tragedian. He is generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molière and Racine.
Le Cid - a five-act French tragicomedy from 1637.
Horace from 1640.
Cinna from 1643
Polyeucte from 1642
Le Menteur from 1643
Nicomède from 1651.
Cours Elémentaire d'Agriculture - A. Arnal (1937 edition.) This book has chapters on managing water systems and irrigation, vineyards, crop rotation, equine management, beekeeping and dairy farming, alongside diagrams and illustrations of agricultural machinery, plants, animal anatomy and formulas for fertilizers and pesticides. It is a fasciniating insight into French farming methods of the 1930's.
Géométrie, Cours Complémentaires - A. Béché (1933 edition.) This book is filled with fabulous old diagrams and illustrations of angles, spheres, cones and mathematical equations.
Morale, Instruction Civique, Droit Privé, Economie Politique. Cours Complémentaires - Charles Ab Der Halden (1939 edition.) Everything you need to know to be a good French citizen!
