This is a stunning set of five antique French books in faded peach/orange/light brown tones. They are 'aged to perfection' and will give you an instant 'old library' effect. Perfect for adding some 'French chic' to your shelves, brilliant for Boho wedding table displays and as film/photo shoot props for interior styling. Two of these books are volumes of Voltaire's commentaries, from 1825, rare and collectible.
They look lovely tied up with twine and displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, mantelpiece, bedside table or dresser.
These antiquarian books are all hard cover editions, they are distressed from years of genuine use and some of the pages are delicate and loose. They are in genuine vintage condition, as you can see from the photos. They have been held and read by many, many people who have 'thumbed through' them, studied them, ear marked pages, loved, lost and cherished them and they have finally ended up here - looking for a new home and a new adventure. They have also gathered a few pencil marks and names inside the covers over the years. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
Most importantly they have that 'old book smell' reminiscent of libraries and bookshops from a by-gone era - fabulously comforting.
The titles are:
Montesquieu, Morceaux Choisis, M. Roustan (1921 edition.) Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu (18 January 1689 – 10 February 1755), generally referred to as simply Montesquieu, was a French judge, man of letters, and political philosopher. This is selection of his works with study notes, commentaries and observations.
Sciences Naturelles, classe de troisième, V. Boulet et A. Onré (1940 edition.) A fascinating book of anatomical diagrams and illustrations. It covers the dissection of plants and animals, reproduction and evolution. The anatomy of the human body, and everything from the function of our organs to the digestive system and our senses. It has sections on infectious diseases and food hygiene too. Once you pick this book up it is impossible to put down again!
La Femme au Foyer, Mme. Foulon-Lefranc (1944 edition.) This book is packed full of good housekeeping practices and everything the housewife of the 1940's will need to know. Topics such as first aid and childcare to cleaning and cooking - it's all here!
Oeuvres Complètes de Voltaire, Volumes 65 and 66, Commentaires, Tomes I and II (hardcover 1825 editions) These two books are from Voltaire's complete works or "Oeuvres Completes", which consisted of 100 volumes. All in French text, and dated M DCCC XXV (1825.) they are almost 200 years old! They have leather spines and marbleised cardboard covers. The spines are delicate and have sustained some damage. The pages have 'age spots' and edge discoloration which adds to their charm and authenticity. I've left them exactly as I found them because they're authentic.
They need to be handled with respect for their age and condition.
If you wish to display the books in a bundle/stack with string then you would need a minimum space of 15cms / 6" high x 21cms / 8¼" long x 14cms / 5½" deep.
Altogether they weigh 2.4kgs / 5.3 lbs.
